Mobile Broadband a Reliable Alternative to Fixed Line, Says 3 UK
July 28th, 2009Addressing a Broadband for all eForum seminar, Phil Sheppard, the Technical Solutions Director at 3 UK categorically stated that Mobile Broadband is the way of the future as it is fast and reliable and is excellent in terms of set up cost. He stated that mobile broadband could possibly be the practical alternative to fixed line in the near future.
During a discussion on the final Digital Report drafted by Lord Carter, Sheppard said that supporting mobile broadband will help the government in its “broadband for all” initiative, as its basic requirement is just the right spectrum and it does not need much in terms of financial aid from the government, hence it will be highly cost effective.
According to Sheppard, the right spectrum will help provide broadband services to about two million households, which currently cannot be reached through fixed line broadband. This can be achieved with the help of just a few thousand sites, he said.
However, a recent survey conducted by Broadband Genie showed that Sheppard’s views might be a little far fetched. According to the survey results, people are not satisfied with the quality of service that they get from mobile broadband and there is clearly a long way to go before a standard similar to fixed line broadband can be achieved. In the long run, Sheppard may turn out to be correct, but right now, the mobile broadband industry needs to focus on providing better service to the customers before making tall claims.
