While most discussions on reciprocal linking deal with the problems of getting links and finding partners, an equally big problem is how to manage a link directory and handle the numerous requests for reciprocal links sent to you even after you have ceased trying to get new links.

There are many webmasters who just delete these requests, in the same way that they delete other unsolicited e-mail. Handling link requests manually takes a lot of time. You must first go online, look at the site that has sent you a request.

Then, if you want to link to them you have to edit the html page where you keep your links, upload it and finally write an email to the person who has requested the link and inform her that the link is now active. If you get three or four link requests in one day (as I got today), processing them could take up a good part of your morning.

I hardly ever deleted these requests but put them in a pending folder which I never got around to dealing with, until I finally decided to find an automated way to handle this work.

I shopped around and found a site that provides a link management service for the price of $20 per month. They set up your links directory, and once it is in place, all link requests must come through a form placed on your site. When someone fills out the form you get notification.

You go online and look at the request, and if you like it you “press a button” and approve the link. The link is automatically placed on the proper page of your directory and an email gets sent to the person who requested the link. It would take just a few minutes to handle a link request in this way.

However, I wasn’t ready to pay $20 a month for this service and looked around for another solution. There are software programs which, when installed on your own server, do the same kind of directory management but at a far lower price. I found one such software, a PHP script that uses a MySQL data base. The price was great, free of charge. However I had trouble installing it, and wanted to try one of the low cost link management programs that I also came upon during my search for a solution to this problem.

Finally I settled on Reciprocal Link Manager (http://tinyurl.com/5yjkw). What tipped me in favor of the program is that the owner himself uses it on his own sites. I paid $67, and got a PHP script. The directions for uploading the files, changing the file permissions on the server and setting up a MySQL data base were very easy to follow and I set up the directory on a few of my websites without any problem.

The Reciprocal Link Manager produces static pages that are search engine friendly. It is also easy to customize the directory to look like the rest of your site. In addition you can import your old links into your new directory.

The program provides all the functionality of the more expensive online services and gives you a system which enables you to handle several link requests in a very short time. In addition, one component of the program helps you to find new link partners, add their site details to your directory and send reciprocal link requests to them.

Now whenever links are sent to me, if they fit with the theme of my site I add them immediately, instead of deleting them or stuffing them in a folder that I will never get a chance to deal with. If you would like to save time, but also continue to build your site’s link directory, I recommend that you go for an automated solution to the task of link management.

Enough said, lets get started.

Step #1. Set up a account with Amazon.

This is the easiest part of the whole task. Simply go to http://www.amazon.com and set up an account for yourself.

This should only take a few minutes and is very straight forward.

Step #2. Click on your “Your Name” Store tab.

Once you’ve set up your account you should have been given a password in order to login to your account.

If you’re not logged in already, login now.

Now, from within the members area there should be a row of tabs at the top of the members area, click on the one that says “Your Name” Store(ex. ‘Corys Store’ tab).

This will take you to a different area with a different sub-menu.

Click on the tab in the sub-menu that says “About You Area”.

Step #3. Setting up your “About You Area”.

Now this is where you have to pay ‘Special Attention’ because this is what people will see when they click on your ‘About You’ tab.

Assuming you are at the ‘About You Area’ you’ll notice that you have spots available to put your Picture, Name, Nickname, eMail Address, Real Name and About Me.

Go ahead and fill out all the area’s accept your ‘About Me’.

The ‘About Me’ spot is what I’ll talk about in the next step, but for now, just fill out all the other area’s and if you want to put up a picture of yourself, you can, it’s up to you.

Step #4. Setting up the ‘About Me’ section.

This is probably the single most important part of this whole process because this is where your potential customer will read about who you are and what you and your business is all about, so do take this seriously.

Now, you have about 4,000 characters of space to write up a description about who you are and what your business is about, so its up to you on how long you want your description to be.

Before you start writing your description this is what You have to do First within the first 70 to 80 characters of your ‘About Me’ description and I’ll show you an example of how mine looks so you’ll be able to see this in action.

(ex. About me: Hi, I’m Cory Threlfall and I’m the Editor/Publisher of ‘www.internetwondersezine.com’ which is a …)

Do you see what I’ve done?

I’ve incorporated my ‘Domain Name’ in quotes into my First 70 to 80 characters of my description so when they click on my ‘About Me’ and read my profile they’ll also see my Domain Name, and if they wish to find out more about me they can either ‘Copy and Paste or Type’ my domain into there browser which will then bring them to my website where they can either ‘Subscribe’ to my newsletter or read my sale copy which will then get them to Opt-In to my newsletter.

This is where the ‘List Building’ starts to take place from the traffic sent through Amazon.

Now, we’ve already established that Amazon is a High Traffic website and now that you’ve set up your ‘About Me Area’ the way I’ve outlined it above I’m now going to show you how to direct Amazon’s traffic to your website.

Step #5. Directing Amazon’s traffic to your website.

This is where the fun starts. And once you see How its done you’ll probably kick yourself in the butt like I did when I was shown How-To do this.

What we need to do now is a little exercise so you’ll see for yourself how you’ll tap into Amazon’s traffic.

So, we know that Amazon is best known for Books, so click on the ‘Books’ tab within Amazon’s members area. This will take you to a different page.

In the upper left corner you’ll see a ‘Search Books’ search box.

Now, for the purpose of this exercise, just so that we’re on the same page, lets use ‘internet marketing’ as the search term.

So, go ahead and type that in and press GO!.

You should now see a bunch of listings on books related to ‘internet marketing’.

Scroll down and select the “33 Days To Online Profits” link. This will bring you to its Product Description page.

Within this Product Description page you’ll find Product Details, Editorial Reviews and most important of all, All Customer Reviews.

Notice I said “and most important of all, All Customer Reviews”.

Thats right, all you need to do is ‘Write Reviews’ on books within your particular Niche and when potential customers are reviewing the book you wrote the review on and they scroll down and happen to read your review and click on Your Name to see what you’re all about, guess what they’ll see?

They’ll see your profile with your Name, Nick Name, eMail Address and your ‘About Me’ description with your Domain Name screaming out at them which can easily be typed into there browser.

Traffic comes from various sources, the main one being the search engines. We can examine the ways to get traffic and the inherent drawback if it is not done properly.

1. Search engines

These are the major way to get traffic. By submitting your site to Google and yahoo, you have set the ball rolling to getting great traffic. But often times ( and this is the part the SEO fail to tell you) , submitting your site means just that submitting.

First, it make takes weeks and months to get your site indexed by the major engines. So in the meanwhile get busy submitting to all the other engines you can , you stand a greater chance of being indexed and listed.

When you do get indexed by the major engines unless you are a niche marketer and or your site is well optimized and able to keep up with the ever changing algorithmic rules of the engine, you will not rank too highly.

Not ranking highly affects how many traffic you get. After all, how many people search through results to #3,876,456, and trust me that is a real page rank number. So maybe its time to look at other options if the search engines fail you the first time around.

2. Linking

Who’s linking to you. Linking plays an important role in determining your page rank. How important is still the subject of debate. The fact is there are two types of link techniques considered by the engines. One way back links and reciprocal links. Now which one is better is also a hot topic, but it might just be that one way incoming links to your site has more weight. At least with the search engines current logarithms. That does not mean reciprocal linking does not work, and in fact since it is easier to get, might be your initial starting point with links.

Whichever method you choose, ensure that you link to reputable sites and avoid site with a lower pr value than yours. Make sure the content on the site is relevant to yours as it gives added boosts to your sites ratings.

One quick way to get links is from link partners wherein an automated system is set up to link subscribers. There are monthly fees, and be advised that to pay large amounts of money to persons who will just use a link farm to produce your links makes no sense. If you are going to use it make sure you keep your monthly cost down.

While this methods of garnering links works well, there is talk that the engines are not looking favourable on it. But then again there is always talk. The trick is to keep you eyes and ears open for new developments with the search engines.

At the end of it all, can you get traffic from the link method you will choose?. If so, then choose what works for you. If there was one magic and correct way, then there would not be so many self help books on SEO and search engine algorithms. They are many sites who do not rank high on the search algorithms but do quite well because they get their traffic from link partners.

3. Buy Traffic

When all else fails or like many in addition to, you can purchase traffic. Simply enter web traffic into Google and see the results. There are both free and paid traffic hosts.

The free ones are quite good if you have the time to view someone else’s’ site, and I have personally used some and have tracked the stats. But sometimes it takes viewing up to 5 sites to get one visitor to you. Another drawback can be that the person only want enough credits so that they can get their own visitors, so they do not really visit your site as so as to check your merchandise, they simply load your page. This does not help you sell.

Traffic sites sell traffic to you as country specific, global, targeted and untargeted. The more targeted the visitor the more likely your chance to convert into a purchasing customer. The cost of the traffic package will vary depending on the type of traffic bought. Do not spend unnecessarily high amounts on traffic that may very well be an automated system ‘visiting’ your site. Do your research of these sites carefully before buying plans. Keep the amount low and if necessary spend it around different traffic sites. it is less like that you will lose all your money that way, and if one is ripping you off, chances are(we hope!) not all of them will.

Most website hosting services offer a stats package that you can study. If you’re not sure where this is, call up your hosting service and ask them. Statistics are a vital part of tracking your marketing progress. If you don’t have access to website statistics get a package that can help you in this area. Do not get a counter that simply shows how many visitors you’ve had. You’ll be missing out on vital information that can help strengthen weaknesses in your site.

A good website hosting service offers traffic logs that provide an invaluable insight into the traffic being referred to a web site from various sources such as search engines, directories and other links.

Unfortunately traffic tracking provided by web hosting services is often in the form of raw traffic log files or other difficult to understand cryptic formats. These log files are basically text files that describe actions on the site. It is literally impossible to use the raw log files to understand what your visitors are doing. If you do not have the patience to go through these huge traffic logs, opting for a traffic-logging package would be a good idea.

Basically, two options are available to you and these are: using a log analysis package or subscribing to a remotely hosted traffic logging service. A remotely hosted traffic logging service may be easy to use and is generally the cheaper option of the two. WebTrends Live and HitsLink are two good, remotely hosted, traffic-monitoring services worth considering. However, WebTrends Live is a more complicated system and is suitable for larger ecommerce websites. “SuperStats” is another recommended traffic logging service.

These services do not use your log files. Typically a small section of code is placed on any page you want to track. When the page is viewed, information is stored on the remote server and available in real time to view in charts and tables form.

Log analysis packages are typically expensive to buy and complex to set up. Apart from commercial packages there are also some free log analysis packages available, such as Analog.

A good traffic logging service would provide statistics pertaining to the following:

” How many people visit your site? ” Where are they from? ” How are visitors finding your site? ” What traffic is coming from search engines, links from other sites, and other sources? ” What keyword search phrases are they using to find your site? ” What pages are frequented the most – what information are visitors most interested in? ” How do visitors navigate within your web site?

Knowing the answers to these and other fundamental questions is essential for making informed decisions that maximize the return on investment (ROI) of your web site investment.

The most important aspect of tracking visitors to your website is analyzing all the statistics you get from your tracking software. The three main statistics that will show your overall progress are hits, visitors and page views. Hits are tracked when any picture or page loads from your server on to a visitor’s browser. Hits, however, can be very misleading. It is quite an irrelevant statistic for your website.

The statistic that is probably the most important for a website is Page Views/Visitors. This gives you a good indication of two things. First, how many people are coming to your site, and secondly how long are they staying on your site. If you have 250 visitors and 300 page views you can figure that most visitors view one page on your site and then leave. Generally, if you’re not getting 2 page views per visitor then you should consider upgrading your site’s content so your visitors will stay around longer.

If you see the number of visitors you have increasing as well as the number of page views per visitor increasing then keep up the good work! Always look for this stat as an overall barometer of how your site design is going and if your marketing campaigns are taking hold. Also, a good stat to look for is unique visitors. Once a person visits your site they will not be added to the unique visitors’ category if they visit again. This is a good way to track new visitors to your website.

Page views are a good indication of how “sticky” your website is. A good statistic to keep is Page Views divided by the number of Visitors you have. This statistic will give you a good idea if your content is interesting and if your visitors are staying on your site for a long time and surfing.

Some people are intimidated by web traffic statistics (mostly because of the sheer volume of data available), but they shouldn’t be. While there are many highly specialized statistics that can be used for more in-depth web traffic analysis, the above areas alone can provide invaluable information on your visitors and your website performance. Remember- this data is available for a reason. It’s up to you to use it.

Traffic virus got its name from the same virus itself that infects computers; damaging them and limits their ability to perform well on a specific task. The only difference is that, traffic virus do not infect computers like any type of the more conventional computer viruses do, in fact, they are beneficial.

2) Local visitors (who are not currently clients) come to trust Mr. Smith as he demonstrates over and over again through his articles, and his e-zine, two very appealing attributes — his unwavering commitment to the “putting-the-needs-of-thecustomer- first” philosophy and the breadth of his knowledge pertaining to all things concrete.

Before long, Mr. Smith becomes established in his visitors’ minds as “The Concrete Man.” When these local prospects need a concrete repairman, guess who they’re going to call?

3) Local visitors come to recognize Mr. Smith as more than “some guy with a concrete repair service.” Thanks to the bio (About Us) page, they learn he’s a dedicated father, an active member of the community, and a little league coach, as well as being the owner of a company. Mr. Smith can refer these surfers to merchant-partners (and their products) that he represents (ex., books about landscape design, a retailer of concrete statues, a garden supplier for concrete molds, trowels, etc.,). And, of course, he could also sell his own e-book, consulting services, Google’s AdSense, .

Mr. Smith’s warm-and-willing-to-buy visitors trust his knowledgeable advice. His PREselling efforts make it easier for him to convert these visitors into customers.

Bottom line?

PREsell effectively… to sell effectively. It’s as simple as that! And this means…The needs of your target group must be your #1 priority, the reason behind every action you take. always comes second.

So keep your visitors in constant focus and…

1) PREsell… don’t sell! Use great content to create an “open-to-buy/hire” mindset in your customer. Warm up your visitors first.

2) Maximize profit by maximizing your traffic (by delivering lots of topical content) and Conversion Rate (CR).

3) Your CR depends upon what you do and how you do it. You will achieve higher
Conversion Rates if you…

4) Reach targeted traffic in a reputable fashion (ex., visitors find you via the Search
Engines).

5) Deliver valuable, appropriate editorial content that PREsells.

6) Recommend visitors to your income-generating source (ex., your sales/order page,
the site of the merchant-partners that you represent, your online store, etc.) after they come to respect and like you.

Many of you know that one of the Google’s weakest links has
always been the web analytics, in opposition to his closest
competitor Overture (owned by Yahoo), who 3 years ago acquired
KeyLime (a web analytics software company) for its own usage. As
a step ahead, Google recently announced the purchase of Urchin,
in order to compete with Overture offering a better statistics
option to their customers.

In the other hand, we have a well known participant called
WebTrends, who had been sold by NetIQ after only 3 years since
they acquired it; why? We didn’t find a specific reason however
it seems to be that their clients were not satisfied by the
given support service, plus the hard competence from other
players as ClickTracks, who released the ClickTracks
Professional edition, were strong reasons to determine its sale.

As from my own experience I’ve seen that ClickTracks, being an
independent vendor, is constantly working on new products such
as their new release: ClickTracks Optimizer (great for mid/large
size web sites), and adding to the existing ClickTracks Analyzer
and Pro editions new marketing oriented features and upgrades
options, in order to satisfy their customers around the world
and assist them while taking important decisions.
