A new legislation passed by the European Union Parliament has asked member countries to go in for more regular and frequent eye testing to reduce the number of accidents occurring due to poor vision.

Laura Butler, the Corporate Account Manager of research firm Specasvers, has revealed the surprising data that out of the 187 companies surveyed recently by the firm, 78% of the companies had no knowledge of this new legislation that stipulated frequent eye testing for drivers.

Approximately seventeen percent of the total number of accidents is due to poor vision or due to not wearing spectacles. One in every three drivers admitted of not testing their eyesight for more than two years, disregarding their optician’s advice.

Further six percent of drivers admitted to not having their eyesight tested for over eleven years. One in every ten drivers had faced accident or had a close shave because of not wearing proper glasses while driving.

Butler has urged all concerned to start implementing the provisions of the new legislation at the earliest to improve road safety.

The Communication Workers Union is asking the Scottish government to formulate more effective and severe dog laws after a new incident brought the matter of dog attacks to the spotlight. A Royal Mail service postman named Thomas McGrath was brutally attacked by a pair of Japanese Akita dogs in Glasgow when he was on duty.

He was taken to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary after he sustained serious injuries to his face, back and arms. He also suffered serious injuries to his wrist, which required immediate operation.

The incident took place when he was in the Baillieston district delivering mail to a house. The two dogs that were at the rear of the house got free from the poorly constructed fence area and attacked him when he was on the garden path. After the attack was reported, the dogs were put to rest and Strathclyde Police started investigation on the case.

The CWU however feels that the current laws relating to such incidents are not strict enough but are rather ambiguous. Most dog owners escape penalty under the excuse that the incident happened on private property.

About 6,000 incidents of dogs attacking postmen come up every year and some of the cases are quite serious, said David Joyce, CWU national health and safety officer. However, the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act does not fully cover all the aspects of the situation, particularly when attacks take place inside private property, and something must be done to have more stringent laws against errant dog owners, he added.
