With an impressive track record, a Horse of the Year title, and the third all-time leading thoroughbred in terms of prize money won, any horse racing enthusiast would likely declare with total absolution that Curlin is the best thoroughbred that has graced the world of thoroughbred racing for the past 30 years. Most agree with the same conviction. Some do not. Others place him just among the top ten.

If Curlin is to become the best thoroughbred, he first has to win France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October. However, a win there will only earn him a slot alongside other champions. Second, he must become the all-time richest thoroughbred in terms of winnings, a very manageable feat, considering that his current $8.8 million is only behind Skip Away’s $9.6 million and Cigar’s (nearly) $2 million. Achieving that will only put him within the top three of the all-time best amongst Spectacular Bid and Cigar.

To be the best, Curlin has to have all that, and more — in the form of a Triple Crown title. No horse in the past 30 years has garnered the Triple Crown honors. Big Brown’s chance to end the Triple Crown drought this year fizzled when he lost in the Belmont Stakes. If Curlin can capitalize on that and win the Triple Crown next year, he will easily be the best there is.
